Decoder Not Switching On
A decoder that won't turn on usually means either a power supply fault, a corrupted firmware load, or in rare cases a dead mainboard. Most cases are economically repairable — we diagnose on site before recommending replacement.
What Usually Causes This Problem
Most cases trace back to one of the following root causes. Our technicians diagnose with a signal meter and the right diagnostic tools on every callout.
Wall socket has no power
Always check first: plug another appliance into the same socket. Surge-tripped sockets and broken extension cords are common culprits.
Power cable damage
Damaged or pinched power cables prevent power from reaching the decoder. Try another known-good power cable.
Internal power supply failure
The decoder's internal PSU is the most common hardware failure point. Repair is usually economical.
Corrupted firmware
Decoders sometimes get stuck on the boot screen. A forced firmware reload via standby-button hold often resolves it.
Lightning surge damage
After a storm, decoders sometimes refuse to boot. Surge damage can hit the PSU or mainboard.
Internal hard drive failure (Explora)
Severely failed Explora hard drives can prevent boot entirely. We diagnose on site.
Work through this before assuming the decoder is dead
A decoder that will not power on is usually one of four things, and three of them are cheap.
- The wall socket or multiplug. Plug something you know works into the same socket. Multiplugs fail more often than decoders, and a surge-protected plug that has done its job will be dead by design.
- The power supply. Many decoders use an external power brick. If the light on the brick is off, the decoder is not the problem. Do not substitute a random adapter — voltage and polarity must match exactly or you will destroy the board.
- Standby versus off. A faint red standby light means the decoder has power and is in standby. Press the power button on the decoder itself rather than the remote — if it wakes, your remote or its batteries are the fault, not the decoder.
- Surge damage. After a lightning storm, a completely dead decoder with no lights at all is often surge damage, usually arriving through the mains or up the coaxial cable from the dish.
The lightning question
Highveld storms damage decoders every summer, and mains surge protection alone is not enough — the coaxial run from the dish is an equally common path. If you have lost a decoder to lightning before, it is worth protecting both.
Where a decoder has taken a surge, replacement is often more economical than repair. We will tell you honestly which it is rather than quoting a repair on a board that is not worth fixing.
Before you buy a replacement
A replacement decoder needs to be paired to your MultiChoice account, and if it is a second decoder in an Extra View setup the linking has to be redone. Buying secondhand carries a real risk of getting a decoder that cannot be paired. We can check that before you spend anything.
