HD Decoder Setup

Affordable HD Setup for Second Rooms & Rentals

The DSTV HD decoder (also called HD Single View) is the budget-friendly choice for second bedrooms, rental properties, cottages and B&Bs. It delivers full HD picture on every supported channel — without the PVR features of the Explora. Setup is straightforward when done correctly.

Common Causes

What Usually Causes This Problem

Most cases trace back to one of the following root causes. Our technicians diagnose with a signal meter and the right diagnostic tools on every callout.

Dish line-of-sight to IS-20

Even a non-PVR HD decoder needs the same precise alignment to IS-20 at 68.5° East to lock HD transponders.

Universal LNB sufficient

Unlike the Explora, the HD Single View does not need a smart LNB — a quality universal LNB does the job.

Smart card pairing

Activation requires live pairing of the smart card with MultiChoice. We do this on site during the visit.

HDMI output to TV

HD decoders output 1080i via HDMI. Older TVs without HDMI need a component-cable workaround.

Bouquet selection

HD channels appear on Premium, Compact Plus, Compact, Family and Access — bouquet determines available channels.

Software updates

Decoder firmware updates over the air. We force a refresh during the install.

Setting up an HD decoder, in order

Sequence matters here. Doing these steps out of order is why a setup that should take fifteen minutes turns into an afternoon.

  1. Cable in first. The coax from the dish goes into LNB IN. Finger-tight, not spanner-tight — over-tightening deforms the connector.
  2. Smart card in, chip-side down. Then power on. Inserting the card while the decoder is running causes avoidable card errors.
  3. HDMI to the TV, and select the matching input on the TV. A blank screen at this point is nearly always the wrong TV input rather than a decoder fault.
  4. Let it complete its first-run scan. Do not press buttons while it is searching. This is where impatience creates most of the problems we get called about.
  5. Activate the card with MultiChoice. Nothing will decode until the card is paired to your account.

What you will see while it settles

Some on-screen messages during setup are normal and not faults:

  • E30 — checking subscription status. Usually clears within about five minutes.
  • E32 — validation in progress. Leave the remote alone.
  • E120 — synchronisation in progress. Leave the decoder on; do not power-cycle it.

Codes that are genuine problems, and what they mean, are covered in our DStv error-code guide.

Second decoder? Stop before you buy a second dish

You do not need a second dish for a second room. Either an additional cable run from the existing dish, or a Smart LNB, will feed both decoders — and linking them under Extra View is cheaper than a second full subscription. Deciding which route before the first cable goes in saves both money and wall damage.

Common questions

Connect the coaxial cable from the dish to LNB IN, insert the smart card chip-side down before powering on, connect HDMI to the TV and select the matching input, let the first-run scan complete without pressing anything, then activate the smart card with MultiChoice.

Chip-side down, and with the decoder switched off. Inserting or removing the card while the decoder is running is a common cause of smart card errors.

Both are normal during setup. E30 means the decoder is checking your subscription status and E32 means validation is in progress. They usually clear within about five minutes — leave the remote alone while they do.

No. A second decoder can be fed from the existing dish using either an additional cable run or a Smart LNB, and linked to your subscription under Extra View, which costs less than a second full subscription.
